Which tax exempt organizations are exempt from filing 990 tax return?

Churches, temples, synagogues, and other houses of worship are exempt from filing 990s. Some other faith based organizations and schools may also be exempt. Government corporations or state institutions that provide essential services may be exempt. To find out if your organization is exempt, you should look at the recognition letter you received from the IRS. On the upper right column on the first page there is a list of items. One of these items is “Form 990,/ 990 -Ez / 990-N ” Underneath that line it will say either “yes” or “no.” If your letter says “Yes” that means you ARE required to file a yearly 990. If it says no, then you do not need to file a yearly 990.

What happens if the nonprofit organization does not file 990 tax return?

If an organization fails to file its 990 for three years in a row, its tax exempt status is automatically revoked. You don’t want this to happen.
